John joined SSCL in 2018, after a rewarding 40-year career with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), where he rose to a strategic leadership role. John then transitioned to the New Zealand Customs Service as Group Manager Business Improvement and Innovation and then into the private sector.

John brings to SSCL great experience and knowledge in strategic and organisational leadership, and extensive hands-on experience in business development, governance, executive and team leadership, complex programme/project procurement and oversight, partnerships, and health and safety. He uses his applied systems knowledge to look at a system as a capability and to the effects a change will have on the wider system, organisation, people and roles. He has been responsible for turning strategy into action to deliver the desired outcomes through effective communication and engagement with staff.

John has extensive knowledge and experience working within the Treasury Better Business Cases (BBC) framework and the multi-agency environment and is experienced in leading complex, multi-functional projects while maintaining the capability to focus on delivering specific outcomes as a project team member. John is a Prosci trained Change facilitator and is ITIL 4 Foundation certified.

Since joining SSCL John has worked with SSCL clients to deliver asset procurement business cases, responses to commercial multi-year tenders, current state and future state organisational reviews and process changes, and providing professional knowledge to clients about the NZDF. He brings an understanding of executive messaging while providing oversight and peer review for most of the current NZDF and Ministry of Defence engagement.
